Plant Description

There are over two hundred varieties of magnolia, a genus of flowering plants native to Asia and the Americas. doTERRA Magnolia oil comes from Michelia x alba, a variety that flourishes in Southeast Asia. This magnolia is also called the white champaca or white jade orchid tree. It bears fragrant flowers twice per year, which have a fresh, floral, and fruity aroma somewhat reminiscent of champagne.

Magnolia trees can grow to nearly one hundred feet tall. Traditionally, farmers harvesting the flowers would erect scaffolding around the trees in order to pick the Magnolia flowers. At some point, farmers began cultivating the trees to a shorter size. To do this, magnolia farmers grow the trees in giant wooden or cement containers. Once the magnolia trees have grown to a sufficient size, farmers plant them in the ground, but still in the containers. This way, the trees continue to grow, but they grow outwards rather than up, allowing harvesters to pick the flowers with greater safety. Magnolia trees grown in this manner mature to about six feet tall. Magnolia blossoms can be harvested off the trees in the summer and then again in the late fall or early winter.

Because of the high linalool content, Magnolia offers powerfully soothing and relaxing benefits to the emotions and skin. Experimental research suggests inhaling magnolia essential oil may help to promote feelings of calmness and relaxation.

For a long time, essential oil has been used for treating diseases that are related to the respiratory system. Some of these respiratory diseases are coughing, asthma, bronchitis, and excess phlegm. This oil has naturally occurring corticosteroids in its compounds that help to treat even stubborn diseases which are hard to treat. For instance, it is very hard to treat Asthma since the patient who is suffering from it needs to use an inhaler that has steroids.

Treatment of diabetes

Diabetes treatment is among the functions of Magnolia essential oil which has led to most people using it. The barks of the Magnolia shrubs have compounds that have similar qualities as Cortisol. Cortisol is a reducing factor that helps in the reduction of stress in the body.

Cortisol plays a huge role in helping in the regulation of the amount of blood sugar that is released by the body. The active ingredients in Magnolia essential oil perform this role very effectively which helps in preventing one from getting diabetes. People who are already suffering from diabetes can use essential oil to help them keep their level of blood sugar in stable conditions.

For people who are underweight, the use of Magnolia essential oil can help in increasing their appetite. This is because of the naturally occurring corticosteroid which leads to one developing a craving for food.

Maintain liver health

Magnolia essential oil is known for stimulating the lymphatic system and helping in making the liver function properly and helping in toxins elimination. Magnolia helps in preventing fat from building up around the liver. The buildup of fat around the liver is among the major causes of liver failure due to various reasons. People who have quit alcohol and who take alcohol can still use this essential oil to help in protecting any damage caused by alcohol to the liver as they age.

The corticosteroid that is found in Magnolia helps one in not getting allergic reactions. This is by increasing one’s strength when it comes to the allergy one has towards things.

There is some research showing that overweight women who take a specific product containing a combination of extracts of magnolia plus Phellodendron (Relora, Next Pharmaceuticals) don’t gain as much weight as other women. They seem to eat fewer calories, possibly because the magnolia reduces their stress-related eating. However, there is no reliable evidence that taking this product actually causes weight loss.
Some other weight loss products include magnolia bark with claims that it reduces cortisol levels. However, there is no evidence that magnolia bark causes weight loss or reduces cortisol levels. In fact, it appears to increase levels of corticosterone, a chemical similar to cortisol.

Regenerating

With its detoxifying and regenerating qualities, magnolia oil can renew your epidermis. Triggering cellular regeneration and blood flow, this wonder oil can leave your skin looking more youthful and radiant than ever.

Help With Allergies

Magnolia can affect the way that your body experiences asthma because the extract of magnolia is similar to steroids, so it could help reduce allergic symptoms and the reaction associated with allergies. Allergies continue to be a mystery to many people, but in a nutshell, it involves the immune system and hypersensitivity to various factors. When you have seasonal allergies, hay fever, or a specific allergy, using magnolia supplementation can help boost your resistance and allow you to feel better.

The body will often react strongly to a foreign substance, even if it is relatively harmless. It may see it as being a virus, and when such a virus enters the body, it activates the white blood cells in the immune system to fight the issue. As a result of the action of your immune system, it can lead to irritation and inflammation that may be experienced internally or externally. It can be as mild as skin redness, or it could cause swelling and hives throughout the body. At its worst, allergic reactions could lead to anaphylactic shock, a potentially deadly issue in which your throat swells.

Calming

Formulated from various compounds including beta-caryophyllene, magnolia oil possesses potent anti-inflammatory properties. When used on the skin, Magnolia Essential Oil reduces redness, puffiness and leaves the skin more even and luminous.

For boosted anti-inflammatory treatments, look also to rose oil and Petitgrain oil.

Replenishing

Magnolia Essential Oil is a nourishing tonic for the skin. As an excellent moisturizer, magnolia oil can plump the skin and act as the ideal element to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. Go one step further and lock in moisture with the likes of neroli oil for ultimate hydration.

Aromatherapy

Magnolia has been used in aromatherapy for centuries. Particularly in China and parts of Southeast Asia, where the plant is abundant. Diffused into the air, magnolia creates a calm and serene atmosphere. Helping to relieve stress-related tension, reduce anxiety and depression, and ultimately relax the mind and body to instill a sense of wellness and vitality.

Given its high concentration of linalool, magnolia is also a natural sedative. Helping to combat insomnia and ensure a healthy sleep cycle. When paired with lavender or linden blossom, magnolia makes a wonderful addition to the bedroom. Contributing to a restful and calm environment for a comfortable night’s sleep.

Topical Treatments

Like many other natural extracts containing linalool, magnolia essential oil offers several benefits when applied topically. From improving health conditions to helping to solve common skin complaints. Linalool itself is naturally anti-inflammatory, making it an effective treatment for many body pains.

According to some experts, one of the greatest benefits of magnolia is helping to relieve menstrual cramps. This is all thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, which both reduce irritation and relieve muscle tension. Taken as a supplement, it’s believed that magnolia can provide effective and rapid pain relief. While also reducing the low mood often associated with the menstrual cycle.

Magnolia essential oil is often listed as one of the best natural remedies for respiratory conditions. Inhaling steam infused with magnolia is believed to combat the symptoms of asthma, bronchitis, and chest infections.

Perfumery and Cosmetics

Thanks to its sweet, creamy, and light floral scent, magnolia has been used in perfumery for centuries. It was named after French botanist, Pierre Magnol. Considered a classic floral fragrance, the scent of magnolia is often paired with other light blooms to create a complete floral bouquet. Though it is strong and distinctive enough to shine on its own.

Magnolia was very popular in perfumery in the 1980s, when floral fragrances were at the forefront of personal beauty. Brands including Acqua di Parma, Eau D’Italie and Yves Rocher continue to produce magnolia-scented perfumes. With an emphasis on capturing the delicate floral character of the plant’s beautiful petals.

Help With Liver Health

Magnolia stimulates the lymphatic system; as a result, it helps remove toxins from the body and can even reduce fat around the liver, which is associated with alcoholic liver disease (ALD), an issue associated with consuming too much alcohol. According to research, magnolia may provide a remedy for many people who drink excessively and yet want to maintain a higher quality of life as they get old. The lymphatic system is found throughout the body and is made up of organs and tissues that remove wastes and toxins.

The lymphatic system has the primary function of transporting lymph throughout the body, which is a fluid that includes white blood cells. The lymph system is similar to your circulatory system because the lymphatic vessels move throughout the body. The lymphatic vessels are connected to the lymph nodes, and those nodes filter the lymph. Some familiar parts of the lymphatic system include the adenoids, tonsils, thymus, and spleen.

A study published in the International Journal of Dental Hygiene showed that magnolia extract helped reduce gingivitis, in which gums become inflamed and bleed easily. [rx]

25 Ways with Magnolia Flower Waters

1. FACIAL TONER

Toning the face is an important step in skincare that is often ignored. Hydrosols such as rosemary can be used as natural facial toners that act as astringents to help close the skin pores, making a smooth finish for the application of other skincare and makeup products.

2. SKIN CLEANSER

Hydrosols can be used for cleansing the skin. Dip a cotton ball into your hydrosol of choice, such as lavender hydrosol, and cleanse your entire face. The hydrosol will reach deep into your skin and disinfect your pores, removing dead cells and other impurities.

3. FACE MASK

Mix 1 tsp bentonite clay with 2 tsp or more of cucumber mint hydrosol and apply to your face and neck. This is a great detoxifying face mask that can draw out impurities, remove acne, and even out the skin tone.

4. BODY MIST

Hydrosols make amazing, refreshing, and fragrant body mists by themselves. Use melissa or lemongrass for a scented pick-me-up any time of the day. Try mixing different hydrosols such as rose and peppermint to create your own signature scents and store them in fine mist spray bottles.

5. AIR FRESHENER

Stop using conventional air fresheners because they are full of toxic, irritating ingredients that can aggravate allergies, weaken the immune system, and upset the hormonal balance. Instead fill a spray bottle with your favorite hydrosol, like cinnamon, to freshen up the atmosphere naturally!

6. HAIR RINSE

After shampooing your hair with a mild sulfate-free shampoo, use a hydrosol hair rinse to add shine to your hair. Hydrosols like rosemary and lavender can make your hair silky, glossy, and manageable.

7. HAIR FRAGRANCE SPRAY

Fill a spray bottle with your favorite hydrosol and mist it on your hair after a bath, before you head out the door, or right before bed to scent your hair. Use fragrant hydrosols like rose, geranium or ylang ylang to make your hair smell exotic and irresistible!

8. GREEN CLEANING

There’s no need to use toxic cleaning products when you can use antibacterial, naturally scented, and powerful grime-removing hydrosols. Pour some tea tree hydrosol onto a microfiber cloth and use it to wipe furniture, glassware, and countertops.

9. FOR BABIES

Many essential oils are unsafe for babies. Hydrosols are safe for babies and unlike essential oils, they can be used undiluted. Hydrosols like roman chamomile are very helpful for soothing teething babies. Rub some chamomile hydrosol on your baby’s gums, or give them a clean organic cotton washcloth dipped in hydrosol to chew on.

10. FOR PETS

Essential oils are toxic for many pets, especially cats, which tend to lick their fur and may ingest the oils. Cats’ livers are not designed to handle and eliminate essential oils, making them toxic to the furry critters. Instead, hydrosols like lavender can be used to soothe itchy fur, repel fleas and treat infections.

11. FRESHEN LINEN

Keep your linen from smelling musty and moldy by spraying hydrosols like cinnamon, lavender, and neroli in your linen cupboards.

12. BUG REPELLENT

Hydrosols are natural bug repellents. They can be used as a bug repellent spray to deter ants, fleas, ticks, mites, mosquitoes, silverfish, spiders, earwigs, waterbugs/roaches, fruit flies, and other bugs.

13. ADD TO YOUR BATH

Add one to two cups of your favorite hydrosol to your bath, along with ¾ cups of Epsom salts and 1 cup of bentonite clay. Take this detoxifying bath once a week to relax, unwind and de-stress your mind, body, and soul.

14. FOR DIY SKINCARE PRODUCTS

Do you know all those DIY skincare products you can make at home? Lotions, creams, serums – you name it! You can use hydrosols in place of water for extra benefits such as natural fragrance, soothing effects, skin regeneration properties, and more!

15. COOLING EYE PADS

Whenever your eyes feel tired or wary, be it from spending too much time on the computer/phone or staying up too late studying, soak 2 circular cotton pads in roman chamomile, lavender, or cornflower hydrosol and place them over your eyes. Assume a resting/lying down position for 15 minutes to relax your eyes, cool your entire body, relieve tension headaches, alleviate dark circles and reduce eye puffiness!

16. FOOT SOAKS

Foot soaks can be relaxing and rejuvenating whenever you feel a bit tired. To a small tub of reasonably hot water, add ½ cup of Epsom salts and ½ cup of hydrosol, and soak your feet for 10 minutes. This is particularly good for relieving corns on the feet, athlete’s foot, foot and nail infections, and other foot maladies.

17. SITZ BATHS

A sitz bath is a healing treatment where you immerse the lower part of your body below your waist into a tub of hot water, herbs, and other medicinal ingredients. The aim here is to target your lower back (for pain, sciatica, and other similar issues) or your genital region (for hemorrhoids, genital infections, episiotomy wounds, and others). Instead of adding essential oils, you can add healing hydrosols like lavender, tea tree, and frankincense to your sitz bath.

18. SUN BURN RELIEF

To heal sunburn wounds and UV damage use a cooling spray filled with frankincense, carrot seed, and cucumber hydrosols. Spray liberally onto the sunburned areas for quick relief and recovery.

19. EAR DROPS

Hydrosols can be used externally as ear drops. Make sure the hydrosol is at room temperature, and not straight out of the fridge before dropping it into the ear. This is because some people report symptoms such as vertigo when cold ear drops are used in the ear. Apply 2 – 3 drops of lavender or myrrh hydrosol to alleviate blocked ears, ear infections, and ear pain.

20. NASAL DROPS

Blocked nasal pathways can be instantly relieved with a few drops of hydrosols such as peppermint, rosemary, or lavender. Hydrosols can reach deep and help fight respiratory ailments such as colds, blocked sinuses, and allergies.

21. FEMININE DOUCHING

I don’t recommend douching. Conventional douches contain harsh chemicals and toxic ingredients that can throw the delicate vaginal pH off balance. But in cases of vaginal infection or odor, natural douching with hydrosols can be of immense benefit.

22. DEODORANT SPRAY

Step out of the shower and apply a few rounds of hydrosol spray under your armpits for a natural deodorant effect. This deodorant works well for mild activities but for more sports-intensive activities, try this homemade essential oil deodorant instead.

23. AFTERSHAVE

Hydrosols such as carrot seed and lavender are favorites for men who are health-conscious and have given up harsh conventional aftershave products. These antibacterial hydrosols can help heal minor cuts and abrasions on the face, and also leave behind a clean and crisp scent.

24. MOUTHWASH

One of my favorite ways to use hydrosols is as an all-natural mouthwash! Swish some frankincense hydrosol or peppermint every after a meal, or right before that important date to cleanse and deodorize your mouth. This will also help strengthen the gums, heal wounds in the mouth and kill harmful bacteria lodged within the teeth.

25. MAKEUP REMOVER

At the end of a long day, nothing feels as good as taking all your makeup off and going to bed with a clean, fresh face. Make your own homemade hydrosol-based cleansing wipes to take off all your makeup. You can also make a makeup setting spray!
