Phytanic Acid Storage Disease

Phytanic acid storage disease, commonly known as Refsum disease, is a rare genetic disorder. It means the body can’t break down a certain type of fat called phytanic acid, leading it to build up in the brain and other tissues. Phytanic acid storage disease, or Refsum disease, is a genetic disorder where the body can’t process certain fats.

Types:

  1. Infantile Refsum Disease (IRD): A severe version affecting infants.
  2. Adult Refsum Disease (ARD): Milder form affecting adults.

Causes (Genetic Mutations linked to the disease):

  1. PEX1
  2. PEX6
  3. PEX10
  4. PEX12
  5. PEX13
  6. PEX14
  7. PEX16
  8. PEX19
  9. PEX2
  10. PEX3
  11. PEX5
  12. PHYH (or PAHX)
  13. PEX26
  14. PEX7
  15. AGPS
  16. FAR1
  17. GNPAT
  18. PEX11B
  19. PEX5L
  20. HACL1

(These are specific genes; mutations in these can lead to problems with peroxisome functions in the body, causing Refsum disease.)

Symptoms:

  1. Night blindness.
