Citronella oil is an essential oil obtained from the leaves and stems of different species of Cymbopogon (lemongrass). The oil is used extensively as a source of perfumery chemicals such as citronellal, citronellol, and geraniol. These chemicals find extensive use in soap, candles and incense, perfumery, cosmetic, and flavoring industries throughout the world. Citronella oil is also a plant-based insect repellent and has been registered for this use in the United States since 1948.[rx] The United States Environmental Protection Agency considers oil of citronella as a biopesticide with a non-toxic mode of action.[rx]
Citron, also known as Citrus medica, is a fragrant but inedible citrus fruit. The citron fruit is usually oblong and covered with a leathery adherent rind. The color of the citron varies from green to orange-yellow. It differs from the rest of the citrus species, such as oranges or lemons, by having a dry pulp that contains just small levels of juice. For many centuries, citron is used for medical purposes (against pulmonary and gastric-intestinal disorders), and for the production of the essential oil, which not only smells nice but also possesses antibiotic properties.

This sunny citrus is cold-pressed from the peel of the Sicilian citron fruit – large, ancient citrus with a thick, fragrant peel. Oils from Citrus fruits are all obtained from the peel through expression. Some time back, the oils were extracted by manually pressing the nuts into sponges that absorb and captured the oil. Presently, this process is more mechanized. However, once extracted, the oil is subject to no more processing than filtering. Because of this, Citron Oils are some of the most unprocessed essential oils.
This completely unique citrus essence is an original heirloom variety. Also known as esrog and etrog, this rind-rich peel has been used since ancient times to uplift the spirit, ease ailments, and punctuate perfumes with its jovial, tenacious top-notes. We love to diffuse the oil to bolster gleeful spaces and inhale it to inspire cheerful faces.
Citron oil is sweet, refreshing, and well-received by many people. They have a general uplifting character that livens the mood and lifts spirits. They are used in aromatherapy and insect repellents.
Types
Citronella oil is classified in trade into two chemotypes:[9]
Ceylon type
- CAS: 89998-15-2
- CAS: 8000-29-1
- EINECS: 289-753-6
- FEMA: 2308
- CoE: 39
- Obtained from: Cymbopogon nardus Rendle
- Main components: citronellal (5–15%), geraniol (18–20%) and geranyl acetate (2%), citronellol (6–8%), limonene (9–11%), and methyl isoeugenol (7–11%).
Java type
- CAS: 91771-61-8
- CAS: 8000-29-1
- EINECS: 294-954-7
- FEMA: 2308
- CoE: 2046
- Obtained from: Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt
- Main components: citronellal (32–45%), geraniol (21–24%) and geranyl acetate (3–8%), citronellol (11–15%), limonene (1–4%).
The higher proportions of citronellal and geraniol in the Java-type oil make it a better source for perfumery derivatives.[1][10] The standard quality of Java type from Indonesia is regulated by the Indonesian authority under SNI 06-3953-1995, which requires a citronellal minimum of 35% and a total geraniol minimum of 85%.[citation needed]
Both types probably originated from the Mana Grass of Sri Lanka, which according to Finnemore (1962) occurs today in two wild forms – Cymbopogon nardus var. lineae (typical) and C. nardus var. confertiflorus. Neither wild form is known to be used for distillation to any appreciable extent.
Citronella oil from Cymbopogon species should not be confused with other similar lemony oils from Corymbia citriodora and Pelargonium citrosum.
Health Benefits
Insect repellent
A 2011 review of 11 studies looked at the effectiveness of various citronella preparations in preventing mosquito bites. It concluded that using citronella oil together with vanillin (found in vanilla beans) provided mosquito protection for up to three hours.
The study also found that DEET provided protection for a much longer period of time than just citronella oil on its own.
A 2015 study compared the ability of DEET, citronella oil, and fennel oil to repel mosquitoes. Researchers found that DEET had a protection rating of over 90 percent over six hours.
Citronella and fennel oil had protection ratings of about 57 percent and 47 percent, respectively, after only two hours.
Another study assessed the effectiveness of several mosquito repellents, and concluded that citronella candles were of little use as a mosquito repellent.
Citronella needs to be reapplied often to be an effective mosquito repellent. However, it may provide protection for up to three hours if it is combined with vanillin. Studies show that it is not as effective as DEET at keeping mosquitos away.
Antifungal agent
Several studies have found that citronella oil has certain antifungal properties that may help weaken or destroy certain types of fungi that can cause health problems.
A 2013 study evaluated the antifungal activity of citronella oil against a strain of fungus known as Aspergillus niger. This common fungus is thought to cause lung and sinus infections in people with weakened immune systems.
The study found that citronella oil had the ability to destroy the cell wall of the fungus and kill the organisms within the cell that can cause infection. This led the researchers to suggest citronella oil may have the potential to be used as a safe and environmentally friendly fungicide.
An earlier study looked at the antibacterial and antifungal activity of ten essential oils and found that citronella oil was effective against all 12 fungi that were tested. The same study found that citronella oil managed to inhibit 15 of 22 bacteria, while eucalyptus, lemongrass, peppermint, and orange oils were effective against all 22 bacterial strains.
A publication from 2016 looked at the effectiveness of citronella and cinnamon oil in fighting Candida albicans, a fungus that can cause infections in the mouth and other parts of the body.
Both essential oils initially reduced the number of viable microorganisms. However, after 48 hours the effect wasn’t significant. The authors suggest that a daily application of a solution of either oil may be effective in reducing this fungus.
Citronella oil seems to be an effective antifungal agent. In some cases, it may need to be reapplied daily to keep fungal infections under control. It also has antibacterial properties, but it is not as effective at killing a broad spectrum of bacteria and germs as some other essential oils.
Wound healing
Based on recent research, citronella oil may have the potential to speed up the healing of wounds. This may be of particular importance for people with diabetes, as wounds tend to heal more slowly with this condition.
In a 2016 animal study researchers looked at the effect that citronella oil had on the healing of Candida-infected wounds in a diabetic mouse model. The citronella oil had both an antifungal and anti-inflammatory effect. The researchers suggested that the combination of these two factors led to accelerated wound healing.
Citronella oil’s antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties may help to speed up the healing of wounds. However, research in this area is limited and more studies need to be done on humans to determine how effective it is.
Weight loss
A 2015 study in rats assessed the effects of inhaling citronella oil and some of its components on weight. Researchers found that inhaling the components of citronella oil decreased feeding, lowered cholesterol, and slowed weight gain.
Limited research has shown that inhaling citronella resulted in weight loss and lower cholesterol levels in rats. More studies need to be done to determine how effective it is with weight loss in humans.
Fight Depression
Citronella oil fights depression and gives relief from anxiety, sadness, and negative feelings. It induces a fresh, happy feeling and hope. [4]
Mosquito repellent
Citronella oil is an ingredient in some mosquito repellents you can buy at the store. Diluted citronella oil seems to prevent mosquito bites for a short amount of time, typically less than 20 minutes. Using 100% citronella oil seems to work for longer but can cause skin reactions. Other mosquito repellents, such as those containing DEET, are usually preferred because these repellents last much longer.
Eliminate Infections
The antiseptic properties of citronella essential oil fight infections in wounds, as well as the urinary tracts, urethra, prostate, and kidneys, while simultaneously protecting them from developing sepsis. [5]
Relieve Spasms
Citronella essential oil relieves spasms of the muscles, respiratory system, and nervous system. KG Stiles, in his book, The Essential Oils Complete Reference Guide: Over 250 Recipes for Natural Wholesome Aromatherapy, mentions how the oil also helps to cure menstrual spasms and gives relief from symptoms such as cramps and coughs. [6]
Anti-inflammatory Properties
A 2017 research paper published in the Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine Journal states that citronella essential oil sedates inflammation, particularly those situations which pertain to the liver, stomach, intestines, and other parts of the digestive system. The inflammations caused as side effects of drugs, excessive use of alcohol or narcotics, hard and spicy food, any disease, or any toxic element getting into the body can also be alleviated using this oil. [7]
Remove Bad Odor
The crisp, rich citrus or lemon-like aroma of citronella oil drives away body odor and is used in deodorants and body sprays, although in very small quantities, since in heavy doses it may create skin irritations. It can also be mixed with the bathwater to have a refreshing bath. [8]
Eliminate Toxins
The diaphoretic properties of citronella essential oil increase sweating and promote the removal of toxins and other unwanted materials like excess water, fat, and salts from the body. This makes the body feel lighter, keeps the skin healthy, and also reduces fever. This also protects you from certain infections.
Stimulate Urination
The increase in the frequency and quantity of urination due to this property of citronella essential oil has many benefits. A 2016 report published in the Scientific Research Journal states that it disposes of waste substances and toxins from the body, including uric acid, excess bile, acids, and salts, as well as water and fats. This helps reduce weight, eliminate infections in the urinary system, free the body from toxins, reduce chances of renal calculi, rheumatism, and arthritis, improve digestion, and keep the heart healthy. [9]
Natural Deodorizer
Citronella essential oil, with its fresh and citrus-like fragrance that strongly resembles lemon and lemongrass, is a perfect natural deodorizing agent to help get rid of body odors and foul smells brought about by a bacteria buildup on your skin. In fact, citronella is a common ingredient in soaps, candles, perfumes and cosmetics!
Furthermore, citronella oil is a viable alternative to the commercial deodorants available out there in the market, since it contains natural compounds and constituents that will not produce any unwanted side effects. Not only will it get rid of the body odor, but it seeks to eradicate the bacteria that causes such foul smells in the first place, due to its antibacterial nature.
Reduce Fever
While the diaphoretic property of this oil increases perspiration, its anti-inflammatory property reduces inflammation, while the antimicrobial property fights infections. The combined effects of these three properties fight fever and reduce body temperature. [10]
Inhibit Fungal Growth
According to a 2014 report published in the Biological Research Journal, citronella oil kills fungus and inhibits fungal growth. This is very useful in countering fungal infections in the ear, nose, and throat region. Contracting fungal infections in the ears are very common and can be very serious. It eliminates fungal infections in other parts of the body as well and helps cure fungal dysentery. [11]
Refreshing Scent
Give yourself a stimulating and calming break from outside pollution and diffuse a few drops of Lemon Essential Oil from an aromatic Essential Oil Diffuser. Add Lemon Essential Oil to other essential oil singles such as Lavender Oil, Rose Oil, Sandalwood Oil, Peppermint Oil, Rose Geranium Oil, and Tea Tree Oil to boost your healing in a way that works for you.
Prevent Stomach Disorders
The use of this oil clears the stomach from infections and other problems and helps it function properly. [13]
Act As a Stimulant
The stimulating effect of the essential oil of citronella may stimulate blood circulation, secretions, and discharges like hormones and enzymes from the glands, brain while also increasing activity in the nervous system. This essential oil also stimulates the immune mechanisms and the metabolism of the body. According to a study published in the Nutrients Journal in 2015, a group of obese rats was administered citronella oil, following which it was noted that there was a significant fall in their body weight. The oil caused a decrease in the appetite of the rats, without any marked changes in liver enzyme concentrations. [14]
Act as Tonic
This property may mean that citronella essential oil has an overall toning effect on the body. It tones up digestion, excretion, the nervous system, and the brain while fortifying the body.
Allergy/ Asthma
Diffusing Lemon Essential Oil can purify the air and also cleanse the respiratory system by clearing the nasal passages and opening the sinuses to fresh air. If you feel a sore throat coming, diffuse Lemon Essential Oil will help soothe your scratchy throat and prevent dry coughing in the middle of the night.
Weight Loss Taste Enhancer
Lemon is used widely in the culinary world because it contains so many nutrients, including vitamin C, B-complex vitamins, calcium, potassium, and fiber, and still tastes yummy.
Kill Intestinal Worms
Citronella essential oil kills intestinal worms. It should be administered in mild doses to children since children are most prone to worms. It is effective on both roundworms and tapeworms. Since the presence of worms interferes with normal physical and mental growth and also with the absorption of nutrients by the body, the use of this oil can greatly increase your quality of life by eliminating those dangerous parasites. [15]
Physiological effects of inhalation
A 2001 study investigated the effects of inhaling citronella, lavender, and rosemary essential oils. Lavender was found to have a relaxing effect and rosemary was found to have a stimulating effect on the brain. Citronella, on the other hand, had a more complex in-between effect. The writers suggest that the effects of citronella could vary by individual.
When inhaled, citronella may have a relaxing effect on some people and a stimulating effect on others.
Traditional uses and benefits of Citron Essential oil
- The fragrant citron essential oil has been used for centuries to treat a variety of common bacterial ailments because citron is fiercely antibacterial.
- The essential oil of the peel is regarded as an antibiotic.
How to use
You can use citronella oil in a variety of ways. Here are some suggestions.
Spray
A spray application may be good for freshening up a room or applying to your skin as an insect repellent. To make a citronella oil spray:
- Add citronella oil to water in a glass spray bottle. The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA) recommends 10 to 15 drops per ounce of water.
- Optional step: Essential oils don’t dissolve in water. Consider adding a dispersing agent such as soluble to your solution.
- Shake the bottle well before spraying.
Because citronella oil has a shorter time span of effectiveness than repellents like DEET, you will need to reapply more often if you’re using it as an insect repellent.
Diffuser
A diffuser can be used to disperse a scent through a room. Like the spray application, you may want to use this method to repel insects or add a pleasant fragrance to a room.
Diffusers typically come with a specific set of instructions. To use citronella oil safely in a diffuser, be sure to follow the product instructions carefully.
Massage oils and creams
Citronella oil can also be added to oils and creams for topical applications. Using citronella oil in this way may help kill germs and fungi on the skin and also promote wound healing.
Always dilute essential oils in a carrier oil before being applied to the skin. Here’s how to make a citronella massage oil or lotion.

b. Dilute it with the same quantity of coconut or jojoba oil.
c. Rub the mixture on your skin or spray on the hair or clothes.
d. Use this as an effective remedy to repel the mosquitoes. - 4. Citronella essential oil
Add 1-2 drops of citronella oil in the shower gel, shampoo or lotion.
To make a massage oil:
- Dilute citronella oil in a carrier oil, like jojoba oil or coconut oil.
- The NAHA recommends adding 15 drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier oil for a 2.5 percent dilution.
- For sensitive skin, you may want to use a one percent solution (6 drops per ounce of carrier oil).
To make a cream or lotion:
- Dilute citronella oil in an unscented cream or lotion.
- The NAHA recommends using a 1 to 2.5 percent dilution for normal skin (6 to 15 drops per ounce), and a 0.5 to 1 percent dilution for sensitive skin (3 to 6 drops per ounce).
- It is used as a fragrance component in soaps, cosmetics, toilet water, perfumes, and by the food industry.
Side Effects
