Monk fruit scientifically known as Siraitia grosvenorii belonging to the family Cucurbitaceae is a unique economic and medicinal plant that is grown in China. It has been used as a natural sweetener and traditional medicine for more than 300 years to treat pharyngitis, pharyngeal , and anti-tussive remedy in China. The species is inherent to Southern China- in the south-western Chinese province of Guangxi as well as in Guangdong, Hunan, Guizhou, Jiangxi, and Northern Thailand. It occurs in the montane forests in the mountainous region of Southern China above 600 m elevation. It prefers moist, humid, and cool areas and well-drained or friable soil rich in organic matter. Usually, the plant is cultivated for its fruit whose extract is nearly 300 times sweeter than sugar and is used in China as a low-calorie sweetener for cooling drinks and in traditional Chinese medicine.

History

Monk fruit gets its name from Buddhist Monks who first used it. The monks meditated and lived on the misty mountains of Guilin where they encountered a fruit they prized and cultivated for its sweetness as well as healing properties. Plant description

Monk fruit is a robust, perennial, dioecious climbing herb with fusiform to sub-globose roots. The plant grows 2 to 5 meters long and climbs by axillary bifid tendrils. Leaves are ovate cordate to hastate to almost triangular 8–15 cm long by 3–12 cm wide with 2–7 cm long, to acuminate apex deeply cordate-emarginate at the base. Female inflorescence forms in axillary clusters which is solitary, 5-merous with persistent reflexed sepals, and yellowish, lanceolate-acuminate thin petals. An is inferior, oblong-ovoid 8–11 mm long by 4–5 mm wide rounded at the base and trilocular with numerous ovules in six rows. The male inflorescence is racemose and arises singularly from leaf axils. An epicarp is thin but hard with three doubled locules each with two rows of seeds surrounded by brownish-grey pulp that dried to light soft material. Seeds are flattened, broadly oval or ovate, light brownish-grey and 15–18 mm long, 10–12 mm broad.
