Cubeb essential oil is derived from the cubebs plant, which mostly grows in Java and Sumatra. For this reason, cubebs are known by many names. Cubeb (Piper cubeba), also known as Java pepper, or tailed pepper, or shital chini / kabab chini in Hindi is a plant in the genus Piper, cultivated for its fruit and essential oil. The fruit is gathered before they are ripe and carefully dried. Commercial cubebs consist of dried berries, similar in appearance to black pepper, but with stalks attached – the “tails” in “tailed pepper”. The dried pericarp is wrinkled, and its color ranges from grayish-brown to black. The seed is hard, white, and oily. The odor of cubebs is described as agreeable and aromatic, and the taste as pungent, acrid, slightly bitter, and persistent. It has been described as tasting like allspice, or like a cross between allspice and black pepper.

Plant Description

Cubeb pepper is a perennial, climbing woody shrub that grows up to 18 – 20 feet long. You can find this plant in the mangrove forest edges, streams, forest margins, tracks, and moist deciduous tropical forests. It can grow in well-drained, rich, and fertile soil. Its stem is glabrous, attached, cylindrical and straight stem slightly thickened at the ends, rooting at the ends.

Leaves

The leaves are short, stout petiole, and the length of the leaf is 6 inches. The shape of the leaf is lanceolate or oval oblong, tapering to the acute apex. It usually comes with an unequal base, slightly wavy, partially coriaceous, pale rather than deep green, the main vein below.

Flower

The flower of the cubeb pepper is unisexual, sessile, dioecious. Each flower comes with a bract base, densely crowded in small, round, pursued, and solid spikes against the leaves. Its male spikes are slim, shortly stalked, long in length, and the female spikes are shorter, rough, thick, and fat.

Fruit

Inflorescence axillary racemes, delicately pubescent, about 1/4 inches long, blunt and slightly tapering at the base, slightly longer than the round tip, horizontally projected from the axis and forming a slender raceme (many ovaries aborted) about 2 inches long. The fruits are green when the young yellow turns into red.

History of Essential Cubeb Oil

The medicinal uses of essential cubeb oil go way back in history. Its use has been documented as early as the 4th century BC by Aristotle’s successor, Theophrastus. While Theophrastus taught his student’s various topics, his specialty was botany. He even wrote what later became a 10-volume book on the subject called “Historia Plantarum.” This was later translated to “Enquiry into Plants.” Nine of these volumes survive today and are available in paperback and hardback English versions. The importance of this written work is that it does indeed include a cubeb essential oil elixir called komakon, which is similar to the Javanese word for cubebs, cumulus.

Few of us consider the practice of magic and mysticism as a truly historic science. However, alchemy was a science that investigated this arena. While alchemy itself doesn’t directly relate to cubeb oil, the time period does. Cubeb essential oil was used for its many benefits when alchemy was common practice. Yet, it doesn’t end there. Modern Hoodoo and witchcraft practitioners still occasionally incorporate cubeb berries into their craft.

Oil of cubebs was often traded along the trade route to India, China, and throughout Europe. While Cubeb essential oil is rarely heard of today, it is still around and in use.

Which doctor may help?

Start with a registered doctor or the nearest qualified health center.

What to tell the doctor

  • Write when the problem started and how it changed.
  • Bring old prescriptions, investigation reports, and current medicines.
  • Write allergies, pregnancy status, diabetes, kidney/liver disease, and major past illnesses.
  • Bring one family member if the patient is weak, elderly, confused, or a child.

Questions to ask

  • What is the most likely cause of my symptoms?
  • Which danger signs mean I should go to hospital quickly?
  • Which tests are necessary now, and which can wait?
  • How should I take medicines safely and what side effects should I watch for?

  • Do not use antibiotics, steroid tablets/injections, or strong painkillers without proper medical advice.
  • Do not hide pregnancy, kidney disease, ulcer, allergy, or blood thinner use.
  • Do not delay emergency care when danger signs are present.

    Visit a qualified clinician

A doctor, nurse, or qualified healthcare provider can examine you and decide which tests or treatment are needed.

Rural patient practical tips
