Mushroom/ Agaricus Muscarius is commonly known as Toad Stool, Bug Agaric, Fly agaric etc. It is a poisonous fungus growing all over the Northern Hemisphere in dry places and in summer. It looks very attractive with bright red cap flecked with pale to dark orange marks. This fungus contains several toxic compounds, the well-known is Muscarin. It acts as an intoxicant to the brain, producing more vertigo and delirium than alcohol, followed by profound sopor with lowered reflexes.

Uses/Indications of Mushroom

  • Cancer treatment (chemotherapy) side effects – Developing research suggests that taking Agaricus mushroom might reduce some of the side effects of chemotherapy including weakness and loss of appetite.
  • Crohn’s disease – Early research shows that taking Agaricus mushroom extract does not reduce fatigue or improve symptoms in people with Crohn’s disease.
  • Type 2 diabetes – People with type 2 diabetes often have “insulin resistance.” This is the inability to use insulin properly. Insulin is the hormone that allows sugar to move into the cells and be used as energy. Many medications that are used to treat diabetes work by lowering insulin resistance. Some early research shows that certain medications are better at lowering insulin resistance when they are given with Agaricus mushroom extract.
  • Hepatitis B – Early research suggests that taking Agaricus mushroom extract might help reduce liver damage in people with long-term hepatitis B infection.
  • Cancer of the blood called “multiple myeloma Early research suggests that taking Agaricus mushroom extract during cancer chemotherapy for multiple myeloma does not improve survival or response to chemotherapy treatment.
  • Ulcerative colitis. Early research shows that taking agaricus mushroom extract helps reduce fatigue and improve symptoms in people with ulcerative colitis.
  • High cholesterol.
  • Hardening of the arteries (arteriosclerosis).
  • Heart disease prevention.
  • Weak bones (osteoporosis) prevention.

The Dosage of Mushroom

  • 10 drops orally, 3 times a day. Consult a physician for use in children under 12 years of age.
  • The higher the potency, the longer the effect. A 6C potency may need to be repeated every 1 – 2 hours for a period to improve symptoms while an M potency may only have to be given once.
  • Medium potencies such as 30C are a good choice for home prescribers who have some familiarity with homeopathy. They may be given every 2 – 4 hours until symptoms are relieved, and then only repeated if symptoms return. Improvement should be noticed by 1 – 3 doses if the correct remedy has been selected.
