This means that IT professionals are more in demand than ever before, which also means increased competition. But there are several ways to stand out from the crowd, including dozens of IT certifications. Below we have curated the best of the best to give yourself a competitive edge.

What is an IT certification?

An IT certification is a document that verifies the competency of an IT professional with a specific skill or technology. IT certifications are often administered by reputable vendors within the IT industry upon completion of an assessment or course. Popular IT certification-issuing vendors include Amazon, Cisco, CompTIA, IASCA, Google, and Microsoft among others.

If there is a particular technology you wish to demonstrate core competency in, that vendor likely offers a certification. An IT professional holding a popular IT certification can be expected to earn 5 to 10% more than their peers.

Do you need an IT certification?

You may not need an IT certification to practice, but they certainly help you win projects. IT certifications allow you to demonstrate competency in certain technologies or IT roles and stand out from the competition. Depending on the program, they also provide opportunities to greatly increase your skills and knowledge to help you grow as a professional.

There are three ways a professional can benefit from an IT certification: skill building, personal branding, and higher pay. While it’s difficult to find data on how IT certifications affect the hourly rates or fixed-price contracts of independent contractors, salary information—which is widely reported—can still give you a good idea of how valuable a certification might be to your profile.

Which IT certification pays the most?

We noticed a few trends among the top 10 highest paying certifications on this list that are worth your consideration:

Cloud Certifications

Google Certified Professional Cloud Architect is the highest-paying certification, paying an average salary of $175,761. AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Associate comes in second at $149,466. Cloud infrastructure is closely tied to the success of an organization and it makes sense that certifications from the two largest cloud providers would rank highly on this list.

Cybersecurity Certifications

Cybersecurity expertise and certifications have a significant presence on our top 30 list. ISACA’s CISM No. 3 ($148,622) and CRISC No. 5 ($146,480) both made the top 10. The growing number of cybersecurity threats such as ransomware attacks have likely encouraged companies to increase investment into InfoSec talent.

Project Management Certifications

Certifications have always been important to project managers, and with the growing demand for agile leaders who can pivot in times of uncertainty, a little extra trust can go a long way. Certified Scrum Master came in at No. 10 at $135,441. PMI’s PMP certification is the 6th highest paying certification with an average salary of $143,493. PMP certifications have increased over 25% in the last 2 years, from a median salary of $114,473 in 2018 to $143,493 in 2020.

Virtualization Certifications

Virtualization certifications also hit the top 10—Certified Kubernetes Associate (CKA) came in at No. 4 ($147,732) and VMware’s VCP6-DCV almost made the list at No. 13 ($130,226). Both containers and virtual machines help businesses build the massively scalable and automated IT architectures needed to grow and compete in an increasingly data-driven market landscape.

How We Chose the Top IT Certifications

We primarily relied on the Global Knowledge Skills and Salary Report to obtain salary information from popular IT certifications. Where those numbers weren’t available we turned to sites like Payscale (which conveniently also provides data based on salary), ZipRecruiter, and the certification vendors themselves. The list was also expanded to look at the highest paying certifications from different fields within IT, including big data processing and DevOps.

Which doctor may help?

Start with a registered doctor or the nearest qualified health center.

What to tell the doctor

  • Write when the problem started and how it changed.
  • Bring old prescriptions, investigation reports, and current medicines.
  • Write allergies, pregnancy status, diabetes, kidney/liver disease, and major past illnesses.
  • Bring one family member if the patient is weak, elderly, confused, or a child.

Questions to ask

  • What is the most likely cause of my symptoms?
  • Which danger signs mean I should go to hospital quickly?
  • Which tests are necessary now, and which can wait?
  • How should I take medicines safely and what side effects should I watch for?
  • When should I come for follow-up?

Tests to discuss

  • Vital signs: temperature, pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturation

Safe pathway to proper treatment

Back pain care roadmap

Use this simple roadmap to understand the next safe steps. It is educational and does not replace examination by a doctor.

Go to emergency care if you notice:
  • New leg weakness, numbness around private area, or loss of bladder/bowel control
  • Back pain after major injury, fever, unexplained weight loss, cancer history, or severe night pain
Doctor / service to discuss: Orthopedic/spine specialist, physical medicine doctor, physiotherapist under guidance, or qualified clinician.
  1. Step 1

    Check danger signs first

If danger signs are present, seek emergency care and do not wait for online information.

  2. Step 2

    Record the symptom story

Write when symptoms started, severity, medicines already taken, allergies, pregnancy status, and test results.

  3. Step 3

    Visit a qualified clinician

A doctor, nurse, or qualified healthcare provider can examine you and decide which tests or treatment are needed.

  4. Step 4

    Do only useful tests

Discuss neurological examination first. X-ray or MRI may be needed only when red flags, injury, nerve weakness, or persistent severe symptoms are present.

  5. Step 5

Follow up and return early if worse

If symptoms worsen, new warning signs appear, or treatment is not helping, return for review quickly.

Rural patient practical tips
  • Take a written symptom diary and all previous prescriptions/test reports.
  • Do not hide medicines already taken, even herbal or over-the-counter medicines.
  • Ask which warning signs mean urgent referral to hospital.
  • Avoid forceful massage or bone-setting when there is weakness, injury, fever, or nerve symptoms.

This roadmap is for education. A real diagnosis and treatment plan requires history, examination, and clinical judgment.
