Social Networking Sites

Social networking sites are online communities where people can interact with friends, family, coworkers, acquaintances, and others with similar interests. Most social networking sites are Web-based and provide many ways for their users to interact, such as chat, messaging, email, video, voice chat, file-sharing, blogging, and discussion groups. Popular social networking sites such as Facebook are being used daily by millions of people and are becoming a part of everyday online activities. Social networking sites provide an immediate and personal way to deliver programs, products, and information to individuals or friends within your network.

Common Social Networking Terms and Elements

Social networking sites and apps each have unique features and points of view, but most have common elements. Whether you’re starting with Facebook Twitter or a new site, you’ll encounter these terms.

Your Public Profile

Your profile contains basic information about you, including a photo, a short bio, the town where you live, and sometimes more personal information, such as your birthday, where you went to college, and what your interests are. You can usually make your profile as personal or vague as you’re comfortable with.

Social networks dedicated to a specific theme, such as music or movies, might need you to supply more information about the topic. For example, dating websites are social networks that focus on making love matches, so you need to be clear about who you are and what you’re looking for so you can find a compatible person.

Friends and Followers

Friends and followers are the heart and soul of social networking, adding the social component. Friends and followers are the people you allow to access your profile. They can see any photos and posts you make and interact with you via comments and “likes” (more on this later). You can also see and interact with their posts.

Some people enjoy getting as many friends and followers as possible, while others prefer a smaller, more intimate group of friends and followers to interact with. Some people even set their profile to “public,” meaning anyone who wants to can follow them or become friends with them. This is often used as a marketing tool.

Not every social media site uses the terms “friends” or “followers.” LinkedIn, for example, refers to “connections.” Whatever term they use, all social networks have a way to designate trusted members that have access to your profile.

Home Feed

Most social networking sites have some kind of home page you see when you log on. This usually displays a feed showing updates from friends. Scrolling through your home feed gets you caught up quickly on the activities, thoughts, and news friends want to share.

Likes, Comments, and Shares

Getting and giving feedback is a huge component of social networking. To indicate that a friend or follower has read and appreciated a post, most sites have some kind of “like” button, perhaps a heart or a thumbs up. Facebook has an array of icons you can use to express your reactions to a post, such as sadness, surprise, or love. You’re expressing yourself without having to say anything specific.

Most social media sites support comments on posts. Since social networking thrives on interaction, comments are an important element. Whether you comment that someone’s baby is cute or make a pointed political observation, comments create conversations and boost the synergy of social networking.

When multiple people comment on a single post, it’s called a thread. Threads can be short or contain hundreds or thousands of comments.

Groups

Some social networking sites have a “group” element that helps users find people with similar interests or engage in discussions on certain topics. A group can be anything from “Johnson High Class of ’98” and “People Who Like Books” to “Doors Fans.”

Social networking groups are both a way to connect with like-minded people as well as a way to identify your interests.

Hashtags

hashtag is a word or keyword phrase that’s preceded by the # symbol, which is called a hash or the pound sign. Users put a hashtag by a name or phrase to help others who may be interested in it to find it when they search for a keyword or particular hashtag. For example, if you post a picture of your baby’s cute face and add #babysmiles, people can find it, along with other posts with the same hashtag, if they search for that phrase. Hashtags help to draw attention to your posts and encourage interaction.

Some users get carried away and use a hashtag every couple of words. Usually, one or two hashtags have more impact than a high number of them.

Tagging

Tagging is another common element of social networking sites, particularly Facebook and Instagram. If you post a photo of several people, you can identify another person in the photo by tagging them, usually by clicking on the picture and adding their name. Tagging is a way of creating more interaction for your posts.

Purpose

Multimedia Sharing

Social networking makes it easy to share video and photography content online. Here are some of the most popular sites for multimedia sharing.

  • YouTube: Social media platform that allows users to share and view video content
  • Flickr: This site provides a powerful option for managing digital photographs online, as well as for sharing them with others.

Professional

Professional social networks are designed to provide opportunities for career-related growth. Some of these types of networks provide a general forum for professionals to connect, while others are focused on specific occupations or interests. A few examples of professional social networks are listed below.

  • LinkedIn: As of November of 2011, LinkedIn had more than 135 million members, making it the largest online professional network. Participants have an opportunity to build relationships by making connections and joining relevant groups.
  • Classroom 2.0: Social network specifically designed to help teachers connect, share and help each other with profession-specific matters.

Informational

Informational communities are made up of people seeking answers to everyday problems. For example, when you are thinking about starting a home improvement project or want to learn how to go green at home, you may perform a web search and discover countless blogs, websites, and forums filled with people who are looking for the same kind of information. A few examples include:

  • The Nature Conservancy: An online community where individuals interested in adopting green living practices and protecting the earth can interact
  • Do-It-Yourself Community: Social media resource to allow do-it-yourself enthusiasts to interact with each other

Educational

Educational networks are where many students go to collaborate with other students on academic projects, conduct research for school, or interact with professors and teachers via blogs and classroom forums. Educational social networks are becoming extremely popular within the educational system today. Some examples of such educational social networks are listed below.

  • The Student Room: UK-based student community featuring a moderated message board and useful resources related to school
  • The Math Forum: A large educational network designed to connect students with an interest in math, this site provides interaction opportunities for students by age group.
  • Nepal’s School Blog: This international social network for K-12 students is designed to build international connections to promote world peace.

Hobbies

One of the most popular reasons many people use the Internet is to research their favorite projects or topics of interest related to personal hobbies. When people find a website based on their favorite hobby, they discover a whole community of people from around the world who share the same passion for those interests. This is what lies at the heart of what makes social networks work, and this is why social networks that are focused on hobbies are some of the most popular. A few examples of hobby-focused social networking sites include:

  • Grow It!: Social media network app specifically for gardening enthusiasts.
  • My Place at Scrapbook.com: Designed specifically for scrapbooking enthusiasts, users can create profiles, share information, post updates, and more.

Academic

Academic researchers who want to share their research and review results achieved by colleagues may find academic-specific social networking to be quite valuable. A few of the most popular online communities for academics are:

  • Academia.edu: Users of this academic social network can share their research, as well as follow research submitted by others.
  • ResearchGate: Online resource for scientists and researchers to find, organize and share useful information as well as network professionally.

Various social networking sites are also valuable tools used by many companies and individuals to extend their contacts and deliver marketing messages.

The nature of social networking – having such a massive base of users who are unknown to you – means that using it carries a degree of risk including becoming a target for cyber-criminals.

The risks

  • Disclosure of private information by either yourself or friends/contacts.
  • Bullying.
  • Cyber-stalking.
  • Access to age-inappropriate content.
  • Online grooming and child abuse.
  • Encountering comments that are violent, sexual, extremist, racist, or offensive activities and hateful attitudes.
  • People trying to persuade or harass you into changing your basic beliefs or ideologies, or adopting an extremist stance.
  • Prosecution or recrimination from posting offensive or inappropriate comments.
  • emails are allegedly from social networking sites but encourage you to visit fraudulent or inappropriate websites.
  • Friends’, other people’s, and companies’ posts encourage you to link to fraudulent or inappropriate websites.
  • People hacking into or hijacking your account or page.
  • Viruses or spyware contained within message attachments or photographs.
  • You or a family member posting that you’re away or going away on holiday and therefore advertising that your home is empty, leaving the way open for burglars. If you do so and you make an insurance claim for a burglary while you are away, your insurance company may well reject it for this reason.

Safe social networking

You can avoid these risks and enjoy using social networking sites by following a few sensible guidelines:

  • Do not let peer pressure or what other people are doing on these sites convince you to do something you are not comfortable with.
  • Be wary of publishing any identifying information about yourself – either in your  or in your posts – such as phone numbers, pictures of your home, workplace, or school, your address, or your birthday.
  • Pick a user name that does not include any personal information. For example, “joe_glasgow” or “jane_liverpool” would be bad choices.
  • Set up a separate email account to register and receive mail from the site. That way if you want to close down your account/page, you can simply stop using that mail account. Setting up a new email account is very simple and quick to do using such providers as Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail, or Gmail.
  • Use strong passwords.
  • Keep your  closed and allow only your friends to view your .
  • What goes online stays online. Do not say anything or publish pictures that might later cause you or someone else embarrassment.
  • Never post comments that are abusive or may cause offense to either individuals or groups of society.
  • Be aware of what friends post about you, or reply to your posts, particularly about your details and activities.
  • Remember that many companies routinely view current or prospective employees’ social networking pages, so be careful about what you say, what pictures you post, and your .
  • Don’t post your holiday dates – or family photos while you are away – as social networking sites are a favorite research tool for the modern burglar.
  • Learn how to use the site properly. Use the privacy features to restrict strangers’ access to your . Be guarded about who you let join your network.
  • Be on your guard against phishing scams, including fake friend requests and posts from individuals or companies inviting you to visit other pages or sites.
  • If you do get caught up in a scam, make sure you remove any corresponding likes and app permissions from your account.
  • Ensure you have effective and updated antivirus/antispyware software and firewall running before you go online.

How to Build a Social Network

Method1

Networking Online and with Apps

Make profiles on popular platforms. Get established on popular sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, Tumblr, Reddit, YouTube, and Flickr. Be careful what you put on any public profile, as anyone can look you up. You will find the broadest audience there.

  • Ask people you know what social media they use.
  • For professional social networking, try LinkedIn.
  • Once you have a nice picture and a cute or accurate name on your platform of choice, add friends freely.
Download messaging apps to communicate with friends. To network with the people, you have in your life already, check out communication apps that will let you send what are cooler text messages. Check out messaging apps that are popular in Asia, like WeChat or WhatsApp.

  • Consider using separate phone numbers for different networks. For example, a personal cell phone and a work cell phone.
  • If you’re interested in privacy, download an encrypted app like Signal.
Find your niche online. Search the platforms you have joined for causes you care about and other interests of yours. For instance, you can join groups on Facebook, and follow organizations on Twitter. Post in these groups, reply to other members and add other members with whom you get along.

  • For instance, if you’re in a Facebook group for Panda Habitat Conservation, and you always feel inspired by the jokes some man named Heinrich from Idaho posts, you can like his post and reply with a joke of your own, and then add him as a friend.
  • Find message boards or online communities that focus on one of your interests. Post on the topic and share your knowledge. If someone on the message board has similar interests or can teach you something, then send them an email or a private message and get to know them.
Add people freely. Request connections with everyone you know and like in real life. If the network is a personal one, add only your close friends you would want to hear your unguarded thoughts. If the network is a business one, add the people you interact with, whether virtually or in person, so you can grow your reach.
Represent yourself. Be active on the sites you choose! Once a day or so, share a comment, photo, or article that interests you and that you think may interest others. If you only use your site to follow others, people will forget you are there.
Interact with your contacts. The best way to strengthen your network is to interact with the people you are connected with. Take a few minutes a day to check the site and express enjoyment of various posts. Different platforms will let you do this in different ways—you might comment or press “like” “heart” or “favorite.” Only do this when you like something! Otherwise, your feed will slowly fill with things that do not interest you.

  • Strive to be genuine in your interactions so you can find true common ground with others.
  • On many platforms, you may post things and tag the people you think may be interested. Only do this on occasion, and try not to tag more than a few people—otherwise, it won’t feel personal
Reconnect with former contacts. Go through your address book, day planner, or other contact information for your current friends and contacts. Make a connection with them just to talk. The subject of your conversation isn’t really important at this point. Just staying in touch works wonders and will serve as the foundation for the next steps.

Method2

Building Community

Throw a party. From a birthday party to a friendly get-together, parties are a great way to gather your friends and expand your network. Ask all of your close friends to come and encourage them to bring guests. Speak with everyone at the party and get phone numbers and contact information from those you do not know and that with whom you share common interests.
Say yes to invitations. Attend weddings, funerals, and parties that you are invited to. Showing that you care about the people in your network, even if you just pop in and say hi, will cause those that are in your ‘network’ to return the same courtesy. And, you could meet other people there too.

  • If you have to say no to an invitation, send an event-appropriate gift or card.
Get active. Consider volunteering and joining a cause that you believe in. You might agitate for a change in election procedures, march against corruption, fundraise for the homeless in your neighborhood, or join an anti-deportation league.

  • You will meet people who share your interests and do some good at the same time.
  • Being active also shows that you care about something greater than yourself, which may help you meet new people.
Find in-person activities online. Meet new people by joining groups of strangers that gather for socializing. Sites like Meetup.com offer local volunteer-led hiking groups, poker parties, and other fun things. Since everyone is participating in the initial difficulty of meeting with strangers, the awkwardness is diminished.
Attend summits, festivals, conferences, expositions, and fairs. Go to large meetups that involve the topics you are interested in. Whether they are about technology, skiing, or scrapbooking, you will meet new people that share similar interests. Introduce yourself to people in line, ask questions at panels, and add other attendees on social media.

  • Try going to the same gatherings every year. That way, you’ll make friends with other regulars.
  • Create business cards that you can hand out to new contacts to stay in touch.

Give back by hosting. If you want to participate in a community, you have to give back! That means hosting parties and connecting people, promoting the interests of others within your network, and otherwise being a mensch to those around you.

  • Consider starting your activist, social, or artistic group. This can be a bit of a daunting task, but if you start your group, whether an internet bulletin board group or an actual meet and greet group, people will be coming to you instead of you looking for them. This is a great way to meet new contacts and friends.

Work your network. Once you have established yourself in a community, and are known to give back to it, ask for favors. Should you be seeking a job, don’t hesitate to tell everyone in your network about it. Send out resumes to those you are closest to or those that share a business interest

Social Media vs Social Networking

The difference between the two things is that social media is mainly used for communications, while social networking is used to build that network of people. Some people also consider “social media” to be a noun, just like digital media or print media, and “social networking” to be a verb.

So the social networking part of Facebook would be its groups, where people add each other in a grouped network deliberately. The social media component would be someone’s page or wall where the communications are public and accessible to all users without a specific network in mind.

So again, a social networking site has the prime objective of allowing an inherently limited group of individuals to connect in a special way—not just a platform for someone to build a profile and advertise something to the world. In light of this, LinkedIn works much more like a hybrid than just a social networking site, although it is still widely considered the primary social networking site for professionals.

On LinkedIn, networking connections work much as described above: the individual can request that another user be added to his or her network, and then that other person can verify or deny the connection.

Networking also happens when someone sends or receives a LinkedIn mail message, or adds an individual to their list of network contacts or endorsers. The social media component on LinkedIn is all of the public information on the individual’s profile, like the resume, education history, and employment history. That information is freely available to any user, no matter who he or she is, so creating it doesn’t consist of social networking behavior.

Theoretically, new social networking sites could focus much more on gated access to content, and less on free social media distribution of data. However, the broader social media and social networking sites like Facebook and LinkedIn work well on the dual model, where they do both of those things simultaneously.
